Tydal is renowned in Norway for its numerous riding centres, a popular activity for tourists, day-trippers and locals. Enjoy a trek with beautiful Icelandic horses.

You can explore the Norwegian wilderness on foot or by ski, bike or sled. However, the best way to experience the rugged expanse of forest and mountains is undoubtedly on horseback.

Tydal – An Unspoilt Wilderness

Tydal is located between Trondheim and Røros, situated 260m above sea level. It offers relatively unspoilt areas of wilderness. On the journey there you will be drawn in by the huge birch and pine forests which opens up to incredible mountain scenery.

The Outdoor Life

Tydal is all about the outdoor life. This area has long been popular with hikers, skiers and fishermen as well as horse riders. Always keep an eye out for rare and not so rare local inhabitants. These include moose, grouse and other mountain birds and lemmings. Tydal offers cold but pristine mountain lakes for swimming in. Henfallet, the largest waterfall in the county at 90m, is one of many incredible waterfalls in the area. There are an abundance of mountain cabins for rental in the area or you can stay at the riding centres.

Riding Centres in Tydal

• Dyrhaug Ridesenter offers various mountain trips during the summer months. It was here that Icelandic horses were first brought to Norway and riding became popular. Choose from various week long trips including riding through the rugged mountains into Sweden. Follow the pilgrim route on return from Sweden, enjoy a cosy night in mountain cabins, or visit local villages.

• Patrusli Gaard offers over thirty years’ experience. Guests can choose from various summer riding programmes. Trek through the birch forests or venture further on into the mountains that border Norway and Sweden. Choose from a half day, full day or two day trek or longer, made by prior arrangement. Patrusli also offer riding camps and lessons, food and accommodation.

• Stugudalshester – This farm has been offering lodging to hikers and tourists for over 100 years. The owners been working with Icelandic horses since 1990. They primarily breed Icelandic horses, but they also offer riding lessons whether it is your first time riding or you want to brush up your skills.

Majestic Icelandic Horses

Icelandic horses are distinctly recognisable, often thought of as a pony due to their short stocky build. They are the only breed of horse in Iceland and the breed is heavily protected. However, Norwegians have long fallen for this majestic animal. Icelandic horses are chosen for riding treks in the mountains due to their easy-going temperament and kind nature. They are hardy in the mountains and have the endurance and ability to cover all types of terrain. After a trek in the mountains you will also develop a fondness for these sturdy and beautiful animals.

After embarking on a trek with one of the riding centres in Tydal, it will also become clear why the people of this region have such a fondness for Icelandic Horses. Whether you choose a trek in the forest, or a week-long trip into the mountains, you will leave in awe of the stunning scenery and some of the best riding in Europe.

Rockheim Panorama is located in the 5th floor of Rockheim – the national museum for pop and rock. The restaurant is surrounded by a terrace with views of the fjord and the city, and has a rocking menu prepared with care and creativity.

The restaurant is open during museum hours, and you can visit it without buying a ticket to the museum.

The Strandbaren beach bar at Stokkøya Sjøsenter has established itself as one of the top restaurants in Trøndelag. The restaurant is situated next to what is perhaps the finest beach in all of central Norway, Hosnasand. Even if you do not have a view from the height here, it’s still an amazing experience to sit behind the bar`s big glass walls, or even outside on the terrace, when the sun sets.

The beach bar serves local cuisine including wonderful mussels and occasionally throws an acoustic concert on weekends.

The island of Tautra, in the Trondheimsfjord, has a lot of history to unfold. Here you find the ruins of a convent dating back to 1207, the new Maria Convent built in 2006 and the Klostergården, offering rooms, restaurant and a farm shop.

There are large farms on both sides of the road, an impressive view of the fjord and fields, the ever narrowing road – and then the bridge that leads us over to Tautra.

An automatic barrier opens as we approach in the car, and closes behind us. It is as though we are being ceremoniously allowed to cross over to Tautra. However, the barrier is there for practical reasons. It is intended to protect the native fauna from predators. The fact is that Tautra is a nature reserve and a bird conservation area.

I start to loosen up as I arrive on the island. I’d like to be staying here for at least a week! Tautra has its own kind of peace and quiet. Perhaps I feel this way because I know we will be visiting the ruins of the convent from 1207?

The Ruins at Klostergården

“On Sundays in particular there are lots of people here in Tautra,” says Ståle Anderssen. He owns and runs the Klostergården. Many people have their Sunday walk here. They bring their families and friends on a little sightseeing tour, or for coffee or a dinner.

“Of course the ruins are an attraction,” says Anderssen. “And they are used for both weddings and Christenings.”We can catch a glimpse of the old convent ruins behind the house, like a beautiful theatre backdrop.

I have a little look around Klostergården, walk through the perennial nursery, through and past the ruins, across the yard to the farm shop – where I stay for a while. There’s lots of fun stuff to see at the shop. Amongst other things they sell farm fare, lotions and soaps from the Maria Convent, ceramics and beer. “Brewery” it says on a sign above one of the doors, and in front of the shelves of home-brewed beer, quite a crowd has formed.

“We began brewing beer four years ago. The brewery manager is my oldest son. We want to make it a hit. We now brew nine different types of ale here,” says a delighted Ståle Anderssen.

The Maria Convent

From the Klostergården, I proceed to today’s convent, the Maria Convent – a modern building built in 2006, with stylish, award-winning architecture. Everyone is welcome here, and the visitor’s centre also welcomes all visitors. We are met by a delightful aroma as we approach the entrance. The nuns at the Maria Convent make a living from the manufacture of skin cream and herb soaps. A visit here is literally heavenly.

My hours in Tautra pass quickly, and as we approach the bridge once again I can’t help thinking: I wish I could have stayed a little longer.

Experience eleven thousand years of coastal culture, see the isles and skerries of Vikna, and encounter thousands of salmon at close range.

You are hereby invited to an exhibition on land and a boat ride bringing you in close contact with nature and modern aquaculture.

First Act: A viewing on land

The first act is part of the permanent exhibition entitled “The land and the great ocean beyond” at the Norveg coastal culture centre in Rørvik, where the history and significance of the aquaculture industry are on display. The fish farming industry creates important jobs along the coast, but even more impressive is Norway’s important role as food supplier on the international market. The aquaculture exhibition opens in June 2013.

Second Act: A boat ride

Many visitors to the coast of Namdalen want to experience the sea and the isles and skerries at close range. SalmoNor’s new fast and comfortable boat takes passengers out to the sea-based installations to show them a modern fish farm at full capacity.

The boat ride out to the installations at Bondøya or Risværgalten is an experience in its own right, sailing among the isles and skerries and beautiful scenery. Even though the weather on the Namdal coast is variable, a trip out to sea is always an exotic experience. Don’t forget your camera!

The wealth of industrial activity along the shipping lanes provide a good indication of the importance of aquaculture in the area, and your onboard guide has lots to tell you. And you can ask questions, too ..

The Third Act: A viewing at the sea-based installations

Both sea-based installations, Bondøya and Risværgalten, are modern, large-scale sea farms with facilities specially adapted to accommodate visits by the general public. SalmoNor has been producing salmon at these facilities for many years. The key is to team up with nature and to make use of the natural surroundings in order to obtain optimum conditions for the salmon.

At the sea-based installations you will be welcomed by the salmon technician and will have the opportunity of going down to the edge of the pen. In this way you will have close contact with life on the salmon farm and the thousands of salmon swimming in the sea beneath you. The salmon technician will tell you about salmon farming and will be happy to answer your questions. Perhaps you will also be able to hand-feed the salmon?

On the way back to the quay in Rørvik, you will have the opportunity of digesting your experiences, taking more pictures, and simply enjoying the scenery. The boat ride starts and ends on Norveg’s floating jetty. Why not finish off with lunch or dinner at Restaurant Norveg, where the chef has composed a menu inspired by local coastal culture and local ingredients.

With its historical atmosphere and many attractions, Røros is a fascinating destination. Here are a few tips on what to see and do, and where to spend the night in Røros.

Many reasons to visit Røros

There are many reasons for visiting Røros, but no matter whether you are seeking a romantic weekend, wish to taste local fare on a food safari, or join in for a guided tour of Røros, you will no doubt want to stay in pleasant surroundings and have a good night’s sleep. We can promise you that in Røros.

Røros also has a wealth of excellent eating places to offer, whether you are seeking an exclusive dinner with several courses, or just a quick snack in passing on your way to your next adventure. Here you will find a list of eating places in and around Røros.

Five tips about overnight accommodation in Røros

Erzscheidergården Hotel and Guesthouse

Erzscheidergården is a small, family-run hotel with Røros Church, aka Bergstaden Ziir, as next-door neighbour. Erzscheidergården dates back to the 1600s, is imbued with the soul of the mining city, and is characterised by the same atmosphere as the rest of the wooden architecture in the heart of this World Heritage town. Here you can stay in cosy rooms, each with their own unique interior furnishings and distinctive atmosphere – all of which are inspired by Rorøs’ nature, culture and people.

Staying at Erzscheidergården is a bit like visiting good friends. You will be served home-made breakfast and taken good care of. In the lounge you may relax with some good reading matter and cakes, watch TV, or listen to music and just dream away the day.

Vertshuset Røros (Inn)

The Vertshuset Røros inn is situated in Kjerkgata street and offers both rooms and apartments with an exciting design. The rooms at the inn are located in the Ramgården and Uldvarefabrikken (wool factory) buildings. In the Ramgården’s traditional Røros-style backyard, you can spend the night in a traditional storehouse, entrance hall or in the loft. The rooms in the Uldvarefabrikken, which dates back to 1914, have plenty of headroom and a modern appearance. The history of the factory, and of Røros itself, form the basis for the interior furnishings and embellishments, and the interaction between old and new has been given considerable focus. In the Uldvarefabrikken there are rooms with and without their own kitchens.

Vertshuset Røros also houses one of Røros’ best restaurants, whose menu includes arctic char, reindeer, venison and panna cotta made from a kind of junket.

Røros Hotel

Røros Hotel is the biggest hotel in Røros and the mountain district, offering 156 comfortable rooms, restaurants, meeting and conference facilities, reception rooms, bars, a swimming pool and a sauna. The hotel is situated at the heart of the Røros World Heritage Site, only a few minute’s walk from the town centre and with the wonderful hiking opportunities of the Røros mountain plain right outside the door. The hotel offers rooms of various sizes, including family rooms.

At Røros Hotel you will be served first rate meals based on ingredients from the region, either in the restaurant or in the Brasserie.

Bergstadens Hotel

Bergstadens Hotel is centrally situated in Røros town centre. The 90 rooms have all been recently redecorated. Should you require a more exclusive experience, they also have suites at your disposal.

The hotel runs several eating places, including Peder Hiort Mathus and SkanckeBua, with local food on the menu.

Idrettsparken Hotel

Idrettsparken Hotel is a family-run establishment with a cosy atmosphere and reasonable rates. The hotel has 24 double rooms with a toilet, shower and TV. Free wireless internet access is available all over the hotel. All rooms have separable beds.

Idrettsparken also has a section with 8 recently refurbished rooms with a shower and toilet in the corridor. Four of the rooms have four beds and a sofa bed, while the remaining four are double rooms. There are altogether 28 beds in this section.

For guests seeking that “little bit extra”, the hotel offers an exclusive, self-contained apartment, with a spacious Røros-inspired kitchen, a dining room and a lounge area with cable-TV. The apartment includes two bedrooms, with altogether 6 beds, and a separate bathroom and WC.

Red Deer Safari in Hitra

Hitra-Frøya Guide service takes you on safari in search of red deer among one of northern Europe’s biggest populations of these majestic animals. Trips begin early in the morning, and on the way the guide will take you to the deer’s regular trails and lure the animals out for you. Binoculars and a flask of coffee should be on your list of necessary equipment for this wonderful safari.
For further details about red deer safaris in Hitra, please contact Hitra-Frøya Guideservice: ellen@oyguiden.no or (+47) 48 18 67 28.

Bear Safaris in Lierne

Taking part on a guided bear safari and bear camp in Lierne, is like going on a bear detective course. What do bear tracks look like? What has the bear eaten? What does a squashed bush in the woods imply? Why has the ant hill been broken up, and how much does a bear eat?

You will know the answer to all of this and more after taking part in a safari in the realm of the bears under the auspices of Lierne National Park Centre – and perhaps you may even see a real bear?

Musk Ox Safari in the Dovrefjell Mountains

Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park is the only place in Norway, and one of only a few worldwide, where you can join a guided musk ox safari. There are just over 200 musk oxen in the Dovrefjell mountains and about 150 of them graze west of Drivdalen and on the luxuriant hillsides leading down to the River Driva in the borough of Oppdal. This population is one of few which are increasing in number.

Elk Safaris in Oppdal

The Eurasian elk, or moose, is Norway’s biggest living land mammal with a shoulder height of up to 2.3 metres. Bulls may be 2.5 to 3.2 metres long, while the females are somewhat smaller. These magnificent animals are found in Oppdal, and the rest of Scandinavia. Elk normally prefer to roam around on their own. They are active all day long, but are most active around dawn and dusk, so trips are adapted to these daylight conditions.

Together with local, experienced guides, the trip takes you by bus into forest areas where there are known to be a lot of elk. Your chances of seeing elk in their natural environment are very good. Your guide will tell you about flora and fauna in Oppdal and at some point during the trip coffee and biscuits will be served in the open air. Bring your camera!

Rockheim – The National Museum of Popular Music

Rockheim is a museum with a difference, leading you on a tour of Norwegian music from the 1950s to the 2000s. Here you can listen to, read about and have fun with music and interactive exhibitions. A visit here is guaranteed to evoke memories, whether you are 25 or 55.

Nidaros Cathedral (Nidarosdomen)

Many people feel that Norway’s national shrine, Nidaros Cathedral, is a place they simply have to visit when in Trondheim, and this is not without reason. Work on Nidaros Cathedral began in the year 1070, on the burial site of King Olav the Holy. The stained glass windows, sculptures, façade and the history of it all, make Nidaros Cathedral a sight everyone should see.

Ringve Music Museum

Ringve Music Museum is a special museum dedicated to music and musical instruments, and is a keen promoter of the history of music. Ringve is also a museum of tomorrow, dealing with many new musical trends in a multi-cultural and modern Norway. The music museum, summer residence and botanical gardens are, together with the amply stocked museum shop and the Tordenskiold Kro tavern, among the things you should be sure to visit when at Ringve.

The Ladestien Path

Ladestien is an approximately 8 km long path leading from Ladehammerkaia Quay to the shore at Grilstadfjæra. On their own separate hills in the Ladestien landscape, we find the Lade Gård, Ringve Gård and Østmarka Gård estates. A number of remnants from the War can be found along the path, including the remains of underground chambers, the foundations of gun emplacements and adjoining passageways. With its romantic Swiss-style winter garden, the tavern called Vertshuset Strandheim, or Sponhuset, is idyllically situated on the Ladestien path and is well worth a visit.

Ladeparken Park

Trondheim’s newest recreational area is called Ladeparken, a park covering an area of 16,000 m2. Here you will find miniature fountains, a pavilion, climbing frames, stepping stones in the water, and lots more that make the park an exciting place for young and old.

Lian Restaurant

Catch the world’s northernmost tram, the Gråkallbanen, from the city centre to Lian Restaurant. While taking in the marvellous views and scenic surroundings, you can enjoy a combination of local fare made with spices and techniques known from international cuisine.

Bakklandet

Bakklandet, on the River Nidelva, is Trondheim’s “old city”, and has been inhabited since the early 1600s. Here you will find small, colourful wooden buildings clustered together, many of them housing cosy cafés, good restaurants and exciting designer shops.

Tyholttårnet Tower

Tyholttårnet tower is 124 metres tall and here you will find, amongst other things, Egon, Trondheim’s only rotating restaurant. From the restaurant there is a fantastic view of the whole of Trondheim, and in the course of an hour you can see the entire city while enjoying your meal.

Kristiansten Fort

Kristiansten Fort was completed in 1684, and is located on high ground overlooking Bakklandet. The grounds, with restaurant Kommandanten, several fortifications and a spacious park, are a popular destination among Trondheim’s inhabitants.

Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum

Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum is one of the country’s biggest cultural history museums, comprising collections of buildings and artefacts, archive material and a comprehensive photo archive. The museum is spread out over an extensive recreational area. Children and young people are one of the museum’s most important target groups, so there is plenty to see there for both young and old.

Shopping in Midtbyen, in the city centre

Trondheim is an exciting city to go shopping in, and here you will find everything from major, well-known chain stores, to independent designer boutiques with exclusive merchandise. Many of the most popular shops are found in the pedestrian precincts of Nordre gate and Thomas Angells gate, or the streets of Olav Tryggvasons gate and Fjordgata, all of which are found within a narrow radius in Midtbyen.

Shopping Centres in Trondheim

In Trondheim there are many shopping centres where you will find “everything in one place”. In Midtbyen we find the Byhaven and Mercur malls, which both house approx. 40 shops, the Olavskvartalet, which is the mall at the Olavshallen culture centre, and Trondheim Town Square (Torg) where there are about 70 shops.

Just outside the city centre we find shopping centres like Sirkus, City Lade and Lade Arena, and at Tiller, south of Trondheim we find City Syd.

Ilabekken/Ilaparken Park

The stream known as Ilabekken starts in Bymarka and runs through the Kobberdammen, Baklidammen and Theisendammen ponds down to Ilsvika cove and Iladalen Park. Iladalen Park is centred on the Ilabekken, which runs from south to north via an artificial pond in the middle of the park.

Ilaparken Park is situated at Ilevollen in the part of the city known as Ila. In the park there is a music pavilion, playground, seating, a ball court which is iced over during the winter, together with spacious planted areas and lawns.

Sjøbadet saltwater bathing spot at Brattøra

The saltwater bathing spot, Sjøbadet, is near Rockheim and the Pirbadet water park, and was re-opened in 2011. Sjøbadet offers sunbathing spots and a diving board and is a popular recreational area throughout the summer.

Munkholmen

Munkholmen is a tiny island in the Trondheimsfjord, about 2 km off Trondheim city centre. During the summer the island is a popular spot for outings and has plenty of scope for bathing and sunbathing. There is also a café there and a small restaurant with outdoor seating. You can catch a boat to Munkholmen from Ravnkloa. Munkholmen has an eventful history and is now a listed monument.

Den Gode Nabo – lekteren (The Good Neighbour – The Barge)

When the barge at Den Gode Nabo, or «Nabo’n» as they call it, is back on the River Nidelva, it means that summer has arrived in Trondheim. The sun shines practically all day long there, there is a view of Nidaros Cathedral, the wharf buildings along the river bank and Bakklandet; and you can enjoy food and drink there from morning to evening. Den Gode Nabo has one of the widest selections of beers in Trondheim.

Antikvariatet (The Antiquarian)

Only a few metres away from Nabo’n we find Antikvariatet, offering a wide range of drinks and nicely sheltered outdoor service. The outdoor seating at Antikvariatet is not in the sunniest part of the city, but the sun does shine there for a few hours a day. Here, you will be seated slightly lower than street level and can watch tourists and locals passing by in the pedestrian precinct, while you relax with a nice cool drink. Here, too, they offer a wide range of beers. Follow Antikvariatet on Facebook.

Bakgården Bar and Eatery

Among the places you definitely should check out are Bare Blåbær and Bar Passiar at Dokkhuset.

Olavs Pub og Spiseri

In the same building as the cinema, Nova Kinosenter, in Cicignons Plass, we find Olavs Pub og Spiseri, with a varied menu and a small, but pleasant area for outdoor service. From time to time concerts and stand-up shows are arranged here, something which you may like to see after a few hours in the open air.

Ni Muser (Nine Muses)

Baklandet Skydsstasjon (Baklandet Station)
